Uncategorized Feb 14, 2022

Are you preparing for a job promotion? If so, you're in luck!

In this blog post, we will discuss how to set yourself apart from the competition and prepare your resume for a job promotion. It's important to remember that promotions don't happen overnight. You need to put in the time and effort to make sure that you are ready for the next step in your career. There have been many lost promotions because someone feels they deserve it but they did not prepare in a way that would have solidified it. Let's get started!

Update Your Resume & LinkedIn Profile. The first thing you need to do is make sure that your resume is up-to-date. If you have been working at your job for a while, it's likely that you will need to update your resume. Make sure to highlight any promotions or accomplishments that you have achieved since your last resume update. You should also focus on adding new skills to your resume. Promotions often come with new responsibilities, so it's important to show potential employers, or your current employer, that you are capable of handling these new tasks...whether you believe they should know or not.

Make sure to update your LinkedIn profile and add all the details about your previous positions, your specific responsibilities, and special projects you lead or collaborated on.

Do some Research. It's important to point out that you should do your research on the individuals internally and externally who have been in the position you are looking to secure. This is one of the most important actions you can take! Reach out to people through LinkedIn, Networking groups, etc. Buy someone coffee or lunch.  Ask them questions about their experience and job duties so you can have a good understanding of what the job entails. You want to be able to show that you are knowledgeable about the job and what is required. It’s not time to be shy!

Position Yourself as THE Candidate. In order to set yourself apart from the competition, it's important to be well-rounded and differentiate yourself the right way. This means developing your skills in multiple areas, not just one specific skill set. Employers want employees who can solve problems and think outside the box. They don't want employees who are only good at one thing. So, if you can show that you are capable of handling a variety of tasks, you will be more likely to land the job promotion that you desire.

Remember this when you are researching individuals who have been in the position or are currently in the position you want. If you are able to meet with them, ask them what they felt set them apart from the competition. What did they do to prepare? What would they have done differently? This information will be extremely valuable as you move forward in your job promotion preparation process.

Become a Master Networker. Last but not least, make sure to network with others in your field. Networking is a great way to learn about job opportunities and to make connections with potential employers or with those who work directly with your current company who work directly with the person you are looking to be promoted to work with. It's also a great way to show that you are serious about your career and that you are willing to go above and beyond in order to achieve success.

So, these are just a few tips on how to prepare for a job promotion. Keep in mind that it's important to stay humble and to put in the time and effort required for a job promotion. Good luck!
